Setting the Scene
The Rhode Island women's volleyball team traveled across town on Saturday to take part in a pair of matches versus Eastern Kentucky and Pittsburgh in the Pitt Panther Invitational at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse. On Friday night the Rams defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) 3-0.
How It Happened
The Rams won the first match of the day against Eastern Kentucky in five games (3-2). Rhody trailed EKU 2-1, but rallied back to win the final two sets by counts of 25-15 and 15-11, respectively to claim the match. In the nightcap against tournament host Pittsburgh, Rhody tied the match at one game apiece, but the Panthers closed out the Rams in four, posting 25-20 victories in sets three and four.
Stars of the Match
Senior Kayla Wilson totaled 19 kills in URI's 3-2 victory over Eastern Kentucky. Wilson's 19 terminations were just two shy of her career high. Sophomore Britta Baarstad led the Rams with 13 kills in the Rams' 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh.
What it Means
With the win, the Rams improved to 2-1 and handed head coach Bob Schneck his 524th career victory.
Stat of the Day
The Rams posted a season-high .433 attack percentage in the fourth set of their match against Eastern Kentucky. Rhody won the set 25-15 and went on to claim the match in five games.
The Rams return to action on Sept. 2 versus Iona as it heads to the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express Tournament. The two-day tournament will also place Rhody against Kent State and Stony Brook.
