Rhode Island Defeats Marist, 3-2

How It Happened
The Rhode Island Rams (3-4) opened the Art Carmichael Invitational with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Marist Red Foxes (3-4).

Rhode Island and Marist traded points through the first half of the set, and the Rams held a 12-11 advantage following back to back service aces from Marist. The Rams then pulled away from the Red Foxes, taking a 17-13 and later a 20-15 lead. The Rams held off a Marist charge and took a 23-19 lead with a kill by Senior Marie Gillcrist, her fifth of the set. The Rams closed out a first set victory with a kill by Sophomore Jenna McGuire, grabbing a 25-21 victory.

In the second set, the Rams jumped out to a 7-2 lead with aces from Lunde Fossdal and Gillcrist. Rhode Island never looked back as they extended their lead to 14-6 with Gillcrist's second ace of the set. The Rams cruised through the remainder of the set, taking the set 25-15 on a block by Sophomore Hazel Brown and Freshman Kelsey Montgomery.

Rhode Island opened the third set with a 4-1 rally, but Marist responded with a 5-1 run of their own to take a 7-6 lead. The Rams took the next six points to grab a 12-7 lead in the set. A Rhode Island error cut the lead to 17-15, and a Marist kill cut Rhody's lead to one. Marist and Rhody traded points until Marist took a 23-22 lead on a kill by Nikki DeSerpa. Marist served up an ace to take the third set 25-22.

After Marist jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth set, the Rams battled back to take a 4-3 lead. The two teams found themselves in a 17-17 deadlock following a Marist kill. A Rhode Island kill gave the Rams an 18-17 lead, but the Red Foxes closed the set with an 8-3 run to win the fourth set 25-21.

Neither team led by more than a point in the fifth set until a Marist error gave Rhode Island a 7-5 lead. The Red Foxes battled back to tie the score at 8-8. The Rams grabbed a 12-10 lead with a Lunde Fossdal kill, but Marist responded with two straight points to even the match at 12-12. With Rhode Island leading 15-14, a Live Lunde Fossdal service ace gave the Rams the victory over Marist.
