Smilansky, Higuchi Win Opening Matches at ITA Northeast Regionals

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Rhode Island's Tiara Higuchi and Rachel Smilansky each advanced to the second qualifying round of the ITA Northeast Regional before being eliminated from the draw Thursday.

Higuchi defeated Brown's Ryan Peus in her first match, 7-6 (1), 1-6, 10-4. She advanced to face Fordham's Weronika Pociec in a tightly contested match. Pociej took the opening set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5) before Higuchi evened the match by winning the second set, 6-4. Pociej won in a super tiebreaker, 10-6.

Smilansky battled Fairfield's Paulina Bakaite through three sets to win her opening match. Smilansky outlasted Bakaite 7-6 (3) in the first set before Bakaite took the second, 6-3. The deciding super tiebreak went to Smilansky, 10-4.

Going against Army's Elizabeth Gilbert in the second round, Smilansky lost in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The Rams still have Erin Chratian in the singles draw, and two teams in the doubles draw. Higuchi and Nadia Rajan make up the first pairing, while Chratian and Smilasnky are teamed together. All will be in competition Friday.
