How It Happened
Junior Rachel Smilansky won all three of her matches to lead Rhode Island on the first day of the URI Invitational Saturday. While the results do not count for the official team records, Rhode Island defeated Providence 5-1 and fell to Wesleyan (Conn.), 3-2.
Against Wesleyan, Smilansky paired with freshman Erin Chratian to come away with an 8-6 victory. She then scored Rhode Island's lone singles victory against the Cardinals, as she defeated Alissa Nakamoto in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5.
She and Chratian teamed up again against Providence, coming away with an 8-3. Chratian added a singled win against the Friars, edging Risa Takenaka in a marathon, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
Freshmen Sydney Chratian and Paulina Loredo also each had three wins Saturday. The duo picked up doubles wins against both Wesleyan and Providence. Loredo also won at No. 2 singles against PC, while Sydney Chratian had a straight set victory at No. 3 singes.
