Castillo Third Rhody Freshman in Four Weeks to Earn A-10 Rookie of the Week

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island freshman Ari Castillo was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday evening. She shared the honor with Saint Louis freshman Kristi Stevenson.

In five games at the Maryland Invitational, Castillo batted .600 (9-for-15) with two home runs, one double, 10 runs scored and five RBI while leading Rhode Island to a 4-1 record. She had at least one hit and one run scored in all five games.

Castillo had three multi-hit games and scored at least twice in four of the five games. She also drew six walks over the weekend and had a .714 on-base percentage, reaching safely in 15 of her 21 plate appearances.

Castillo is the third Rhode Island player to earn A-10 Rookie of the Week honors this season. Sami Villarreal earned the recognition last week, and Faith Musselwhite did so for the week of Feb. 18.

Castillo, Villarreal, Musselwhite and fellow freshman Susan Harrison have all started all 20 games for the Rams, while redshirt freshman Leah Krivitsky has started 18 games thus far. The quintet has combined for 95 hits, 52 runs scored, 18 doubles, 12 home runs, 49 walks and 46 runs batted in already this season.

Rhode Island opens its home schedule Wednesday against in-state rival Brown. Game time is 4:45 p.m.
