Rams Picked 10th in Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Rhode Island softball team was picked 10th in the preseason coaches poll, release by the Atlantic 10.

Four-time defending champion Fordham was picked to win the league once again. Fordham received nine of the possible 10 first-place votes. It had 99 points overall, finishing ahead of Dayton (87) and Saint Joseph's (77) in the poll. The Hawks received one first-place vote. Rounding out the top five were Massachusetts (71) and Saint Louis (61).

Rhode Island is looking to build off its first season under head coach Bridget Hurlman. In 2016, the Rams finished 12-32, an improvement of nine victories over the 2015 season. This year, Hurlman returns two-time All-Conference selection Ali Summers and All-Rookie pitcher Becca Rogers from last year's squad. Rhody also returns six other starters from 2016.

Along with the veterans, Hurlman added nine new faces to the 2017 roster. With seven freshmen and a pair of transfers, Rhode Island has an influx of talent that is expected to have a significant impact this season.

The Rams open the 2017 season in less than two weeks when they travel to Houston for five games at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic. Rhode Island faces Incarnate Word in the opener, and also will play Houston and Ole Miss at the tournament.
