Rams to Honor Seniors Between Games of Doubleheader Saturday

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island closes out the 2016 season with a three-game series against La Salle at the URI Softball Complex this weekend. The series starts with a doubleheader Saturday at noon, followed by a single game Sunday at noon.

Between games on Saturday, Rhode Island will honor six seniors who are playing for the Rams for the final time this weekend. Pitcher Caitlin Kennedy, infielders Lauren Klepchick, Olivia Hendricks and Taylor Archer, and outfielders Emily Hendricks and Kayla Cruz have all been with the program for four seasons.

Rhode Island will look to end the first season under Bridget Hurlman on a high note. The team already has improved its win total by nine games over last season, but the Rams have struggled of late, dropping nine in a row and 15 of its last 16.

La Salle, which is just one game ahead of the Rams in the Atlantic 10 standings, rallied from a four-run deficit to edge Rhody 6-4 earlier this season in a non-league game at the Liberty Softball Classic in March.

The competition has been evenly split in a series that dates back to 1996. La Salle holds a slight edge overall, with much of the Explorers success coming in recent years. La Salle has won nine of the last 10 games between the teams since 2012, including a 6-4 non-conference victory earlier this season.

NOTES
With a .422 on-base percentage, junior Ali Summers currently has the 10th highest single-season OBP in program history. She is trying to join Kellie Cookus as the only players to have two of the top 10 single-season OBP's in team history. Cookus had a team-record .485 OBP in 1998, and a .428 OBP in 1997. Summers had a .448 OBP – the third highest in team history – last year… Sophomore Kylie Shivery has 37 runs batted in, the fourth-highest in a season ever for the Rams. Cookus drove in 44 in 1997, and Chris Dinoto (1982) and Melissa Wilson (2010) each drove in 38 in their best years… Freshman Becca Rogers needs one more win to join Alison Hartzell (2009), Jenna Thurston (2004), Kathy Bailey (1995) and Lori Whidden (1982) as the only Rhody pitchers to win at least 10 games in their freshman season. Whidden won a program record 43 games from 1982-85… Rogers has 80 strikeouts, the fourth highest by a freshman in team history. Only Thurston (172 in 2003), Hartzell (111 in 2009) and Stephanie Poetzsch (105 in 1999) had more.
