Five-Game Weekend Includes Friday Night Contest on

KINGSTON, R.I. – Off to its best start in more than a decade, Rhode Island looks to keep building on its early success this weekend when it travels to the Liberty Softball Classic in Lynchburg, Va.

The Rams – who have won five of their first 12 games for the first time since 2003 – have a chance to finish the southern trip portion of its schedule with a winning record for the first time in 21 years. Rhody opened the 1995 season 8-3 following its extended Florida trip.

Rhode Island will have a rare tripleheader on Friday, starting with a 10 a.m. game against Sacred Heart, followed by a noon start against Norfolk State – which the Rams played four times last weekend. The day will be capped by a 7 p.m. contest against host Liberty, which will be streamed live on and the Big South Network.

On Saturday, the Rams will play a second game against Norfolk State at 12:15 p.m. followed by a contest with fellow Atlantic 10 member La Salle in a non-conference game.

vs. Sacred Heart – 6-4
The teams have met 10 times in a series that goes back to 1983, when the Rams won a 5-4 contest at the Penn State Invitational. The last time the teams played was a 2-1 Sacred Heart victory in 2009 at the Rebel Spring Games.

vs. Norfolk State – 3-2
Rhode Island and Norfolk State are familiar with each other, having played four times last weekend. The Rams and Spartans split a pair of doubleheaders last weekend and will square off two more times this weekend.

vs. Liberty – 1-4
Rhode Island and Liberty will be meeting for the first time since 2010, when Liberty beat the Rams on consecutive days. Rhody's lone win in the all-time series came in 2000 at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.

vs. La Salle – 20-20
It won't count as a conference game, but Rhode Island and La Salle will face off this weekend in a preview of the conference series that will be played May 7-8 in the regular season finale. The teams have played to an even split in the previous 40 meetings, dating back to 1996. The Explorers have won five straight in the series.
