Weather Causes UMBC Tournament to be Canceled; Rams Will Play at Norfolk State Instead

KINGSTON, R.I. – After poor weather conditions caused the UMBC Retriever Classic in Baltimore to be cancelled, Rhode Island will make its way instead to Norfolk State to play a pair of doubleheaders against the Spartans.

Should Rhode Island sweep the Spartans on Saturday, it would be the first time in 19 years the Rams start the season 5-5 through 10 games. Norfolk State is 0-2 on the year, having lost both ends of a doubleheader to George Washington on Feb. 27.

The Rams will become very familiar with Norfolk State over the next eight days. The teams already were scheduled to play twice next week as part of the Liberty Softball Classic in Lynchburg, Va.

The Rams have seven triples in eight contests, and six different players have at least one already this season… Junior Danielle Gariglio and senior Emily Hendricks are both on three-game hitting streaks. Gariglio has a triple, two singled and one walk in her last eight plate appearances… Sophomore Kylie Shivery has at least one RBI in five of Rhode Island's eight games. She has nine RBI on the season. Last year, she tied for the team lead with 15… Freshman Julia Waraksy has allowed just three runs over her last 6.1 innings of work.
