Women's Varsity 8 Defeats Boston College And MIT

KINGSTON, R.I. - It was a big day for the Rhode Island women's rowing team as the varsity 8 won with a time of 7:34.14 to Boston College and MIT in the last home race of the season on the Narrow River. The varsity 8 improves to 6-2 on the season with the win.

The Rams edged by the Eagles who posted a 7:35.04, while MIT came in third with a time of 8:12.64. The varsity 8 was led by senior coxswain Darlene Dorion (Pawtucket, R.I.), Marilyn Woodford (Peacedale, R.I.) in stroke, Stephanie Nussbickel (Millbrook, N.Y.) in seven, Ruth Peterle (North Stonington, Conn.) in six, Ruth Chappell (Wakefield, R.I.) in five, Katie Kapfer (Norwich, Conn.) in four, Ashleigh Tate (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) in three, Ynke deKoe (Wickford, R.I.) in two and Catherine Pruszynski (Gibsonia, Pa.) in bow.

In the novice 8 race it was Rhode Island leading the pack again with a time of 8:28.5. Boston College was second with a time of 8:37.8 and MIT came in third with a time of 9:00.4. The novice 4 also posted a win for the Rams with a time of 9:50.4 and Boston College took second with a time of 10:49.2. The novice 4 team was made up of Lucy Sumners (Gainesville, Fla.), Charlotte Bender (South Kingstown, R.I.), Amy VanRensburg (Manalapan, N.J.)Kathleen Hinkel (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and coxswain Ashley Coughlin.

The second varsity 8 took a loss to the Eagles, with a time of 8:10.17 and Rhody took third in the varsity 4 in a time of 9:45.06.

The Rams will be back in action on April 16-17 as they compete in the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J.
