Varsity 8+ Places Fourth at 2019 Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, Mass. - Rhode Island's Varsity 8+ placed fourth in the 14-team field at the 2019 Eastern Sprints Sunday.

Racing on Lake Quinsigamond, the Rams lineup of coxswain Karen Petrik, Erika Pena, Emily Winslow, Maddie Van Ummersen, Allie Reilly, Sage Iacovazzi, Jennae Alexander, Katie Shattuck and Katie Usher just missed out on a medal. After Rutgers and Radcliffe/Harvard finished well ahead of the field, the Rams were edged for third place by Columbia (6:43.968 to 6:45.728). Rhody was able to hold off Drexel (6:47.032).

The Rams qualified for the Grand Final by surviving a tightly contested morning heat. Going up against Drexel, Temple and Dartmouth, Rhody managed a second-place finish. The four boats were separated by little more than six seconds.

In the Second Varsity 8+ flight, Rhode Island's contingent of coxswain Brenna Kelly, Sarah Dudinski, Madalyn Saporito, Mekenzie Mattheson, Kira McCully, Erin Shober, Kat Gillies, Tinsley Copeland and Kelsey Williams placed eighth. The Rams just missed qualifying for the Grand Final. In the morning heat, the Rams were less than 2.5 seconds behind Dartmouth for the second qualifying spot.

Rhody got off to a fast start in the Petite Final, but Columbia surged ahead, taking the lead 750 meters into the race. Rhode Island's boat maintained contact with Columbia throughout the race, but could not keep pace. The Rams held off Boston College and Connecticut at the finish.

The Rams also placed eighth in the Varsity 4A+ flight. The team of coxswain Tory Bauer, Stephanie Erlacher, Morgan Cody, Anna Sampson and Julia Fortin surged in the final 500 meters of its qualifying heat, but could not quite catch Tennessee. Tennessee finished in 7:32.830, less than 1.2 seconds in front of the Rams (7:33.926).

In the Petite Final, it was a three-team race at the front of the pack. Boston College (7:41.529) just held off Rhode Island (7:43.001) and Drexel (7:44.673) to claim seventh place.

Rhode Island will prepare to defend its title at the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be held on Cooper River, Saturday, May 18.
