Donohoe Announces Ten Signees for 2019-2020 Roster

KINGSTON, R.I.- Rhode Island head coach Shelagh Donohoe announced the signing of nine women for the 2019-2020 roster as part of the National Letter of Intent early signing period.

The class includes nine rowers and one coxswain. Hannah Bachert, Catie Castle, Maria Dupnock, Sammie Gorecki, Tessa Lemay, Lauren Thomas, Chloe Watson, Faith Woyat, Madison Thomas and coxswain Alison Gorriaran will be a part of the program in the fall of 2019. 










Hannah Bachert - 6' - Niskayuna, N.Y. 
Hannah rows for Niskayuna High School. Her rowing accomplishments are highlighted by 2018 Section 2 Indoor Rowing Champion at the 2k distance, 2015 Hardest Worker and Most Improved Novice Rower, being selected to row at the Head of the Charles for three consecutive years (2016-2018) and qualifying to row at SRAA Nationals in 2017 and 2018. In addition to rowing, Hannah's artwork "Reimagining the Four Freedoms", was chosen to be exhibited at the Norman Rockwell Museum. She also received honors at the 28th Annual Regional BOCES Arts and Enrichment Exhibition.  Hannah will be graduating high school with an Advanced Regents Diploma and is an avid volunteer in the Town of Niskayuna. Hannah is undecided in her area of academic study.

"Hannah has a big personality. She is extremely positive and obviously driven to be a successful Division I rower. She is very proud of her high school team/teammates and she is looking to continue that tradition in college. Hannah's potential is unlimited and I look forward to seeing all that she accomplishes at URI."






Catie Castle - 5'11" - Vero Beach, Fla. 
Catie rows for Vero Beach Rowing Club.  Her rowing accomplishments are highlighted by Most Valuable Novice 2015-2016, Oarswoman Award 2016-2017, Best Boat Award 2017-2018, 24 Hour World Record Holder for Small Mixed Teams Concept 2 (2018), Silver Medal FSRA Sweep Championships 2-, A Finals 2018 and Southeast Regionals 5th in the 2-. Katie is an honors student and is planning to study Kinesiology at URI.

"Catie is a quiet leader and has vast experience rowing and racing in all boat categories. Catie is motivated to excel at the next level and she will bring that level of competitiveness to our team. I look forward to coaching Catie in the fall."


Maria Dupnock - 5'7" - Berwyn, Pa.
Maria rows for Archbishop Carroll in Philadelphia. Her crews have routinely finished at the top of the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship and her freshmen year her boat won the US Rowing Mid-Atlantic Championship. Maria is a two-time captain of her team and is on track to set her school's all-time erg record. Maria is an outstanding student and is a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to study Environmental Science at URI.

"Maria is a natural leader. She works hard to achieve her goals in the classroom and on the water. Maria has a great understanding of what it takes to be successful at the collegiate level. She is an outstanding communicator and I am confident she will be a strong leader on our team is well. Maria will hit the ground running at URI."


Sammie Gorecki - 5'10" - Pittsburgh, Pa. 
Sammie rowed for three years with Mt. Lebanon HS Crew and recently joined Three Rivers Rowing Association in Pittsburgh, PA. Her crews have been successful at the Midwest Scholastic Championship as well as Scholastic Nationals. She looks forward to racing with Three Rivers Rowing Club this year. This fall, her boat finished 2nd at the Head of the Ohio. Sammie is a high achiever in the classroom, earning high honor roll. In addition to rowing, Sammie earned a 2nd place finish at the Truss Bust - Engineering Design Competition. She is also a member of the Girls Scouts travel troop, making trips to Switzerland, Italy and Costa Rica. Sammie plans to major in engineering.

"Sammie gives off a ton of positive energy. She is competitive and wants to get to the next level of rowing. She is willing to challenge herself and I am confident that she will be an impact rower at the collegiate level. I am very excited to welcome Sammie to the Rhode Island Rowing Team."


Alison Gorriaran - 5'3" - Providence, R.I.
Alison is a coxswain from the Lincoln School in Providence, RI and Narragansett Boat Club. Although Alison will primarily serve as a coxswain, she is also an accomplished lightweight rower. Alison finished 16th at the Head of the Charles in the Youth 2X.  As a coxswain, Alison is her team's first boat coxswain and they have made the grand final of the NEIRA Championship for the past two years. Alison is an outstanding student. She is a 2017 and 2018 National Spanish Exam Honor Student and plans to major in Business and Fine Arts.

"Alison is one of a kind. She is very coachable and is enthusiastic to cox all levels of rowing. She is a confident leader and will excel in college. In addition to her depth of experience in the coxswain seat, Alison is a very accomplished sculler! She finished 16th at the Head of the Charles and she could be called on to row as well as cox. I look forward to coaching Alison and I am excited she decided to stay in Rhode Island."


Tessa Lemay - 5'9" - Essex, Conn.
Tessa is a member of the Valley Regional Rowing Team. She is the captain of her team and has been a member of her varsity since her freshman year. Throughout her high school career, she has been an honors student. This year, her family is hosting a Spanish exchange student and she plans on traveling to Spain this summer. Tessa plans to major in Kinesiology.

"Tessa is a fantastic athlete. She and her family helped establish and improve her current high school team. She takes great pride in getting her program off the ground and she is looking to further her level of competition in college. Tessa is an encourager and will be a great leader on our team. I look forward to working with Tessa."


Lauren Thomas - 5'9" - Longmeadow, Mass. 
Lauren began rowing in her sophomore year. She is a member of the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Rowing Club. Before rowing, she was a standout goalie for high school team. Lauren's rowing accomplishments include a third place finish at the New England Rowing Championship, second place finish at the Head of the Fish and a first place finish at the Saratoga Invite. Lauren is also an outstanding flute player and has made the wind ensemble both in her junior and senior years. She is a member of the Key Club, which is a community service club at her high school. Lauren is planning to major in psychology.

"Lauren is new to rowing but she is a fantastic athlete that picked up the sport quickly.  She is a determined, hard worker and I am confident she will be an outstanding Division 1 rower.  I look forward to coaching Lauren in the years to come."



Chloe Watson - 5'9" - Bristol, R.I.
Chloe rows for Bay View Academy in Providence, R.I. There are only two high school programs in the entire state of Rhode Island. Chloe is a three-time varsity letter winner at Bay View and has been in the first boat since her sophomore year. She has finished in the top half of junior rowers at CRASH-Bs and was selected for the Head of the Charles in 2018. Chloe is an outstanding student and an accomplished violinist. She is a part of the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa History Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society. Her musical accolades include bronze 2016 in Violin Trio at Solo and Ensemble, silver 2017 in Violin Duet at Solo and Ensemble and gold 2017 in Violin Solo at Solo and Ensemble. Chloe is planning to study kinesiology at URI.

"Chloe is a very mature, bright rower. She is an outstanding communicator and has natural tendencies of an effective leader. Chloe is very athletic and will be extremely successful at URI. I look forward to coaching her and I am thrilled she has chosen to stay in Rhode Island."  


Faith Woyat - 5'10" - Avon Lake, Ohio
Faith rows for Magnificat High School in Ohio. Her rowing career is highlighted by top-three finishes in the 2017 and 2018 Head of the Ohio Varsity 4+ and Varsity 8+, as well as attending the 2018 SRAA Nationals Championship Regatta in New Jersey. Faith is an honors student that plans on majoring in marketing at URI.

"Faith is a fantastic athlete with an even better personality. She is new to the sport of rowing, so her learning curve will be dramatic. I am excited to work with her next year. She is the type of student-athlete that will add to the depth of the team ,while immediately contributing to the culture we strive for."  

 







Madison Thomas - 5'8" - Ridgeway, Ontario 
Madison attends Wellend Centennial Secondary School in Canada. Before joining St. Catharine's Rowing Club, Madison also rowed for South Niagra Rowing Club. Her rowing accomplishments are highlighted by a 5th place finish in the Youth Double at the 2017 Head of the Charles, a 3rd place finish in the Youth Double at 2017 US Club Nationals and Canadian Henley and a 2nd place finish in the Youth Quad at the 2018 Head of the Charles. Madison was named the 2017 U17 Female Athlete of the Year at the South Niagra Rowing Club. In addition to her rowing accomplishments, Madison is an outstanding student that has earned academic honors. She plans to major in engineering.
