KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island's Varsity 8 boat was named the Atlantic 10 Boat of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
The crew of sophomore Emily Winslow, junior Erika Pena, senior Kiana Anderson, junior Mekenzie Mattheson, junior Allie Reilly, junior Katie Shattuck, freshman Katie Usher, senior Meghan Ellis and senior coxswain Lucy Moyes claimed the honor with its performance last weekend at the Kerr Cup.
The team was victorious at the 52nd annual Kerr Cup Regatta, winning the Lela H. Kerr Cup by sweeping both the finals and the heat round Saturday. In the finals, Rhody won the title in convincing fashion, beating second-place Drexel by eight seconds. Drexel – which hosted the event – had won six of the previous eight Kerr Cups.
Rhode Island's time of 7:10.98 in the finals was nearly five seconds faster than the team's heat time. The Rams finished in 7:15.31 to win the heat and secure its spot in the finals.
The A-10 Boat of the Week award was created this year and is selected by the conference office to recognize an outstanding performance in the weeks leading up to the A-10 Championship, which takes place on Saturday, May 5 at the Cooper River.
