KINGSTON, RI - The University of Rhode Island Men's and Women's Track & Field programs are thrilled to announce the addition of a brand new scoreboard inside Mackal Fieldhouse that was made possible thanks to Aleck Slade and the Slade family.
The scoreboard hangs on the south wall of the Fieldhouse and will be used primarily to display live results during meets beginning with the 2015 Indoor Track & Field season.
After Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn initiated the project in May of 2013, Associate Director of Athletics Gina Sperry and Assistant Director of Management & Planning Art Tuveson, took the lead in terms of organizing and planning the project all the way through installation in December of 2014.
"In collaboration with Art and the coaches of both programs, we were able to decide on the technical and aesthetic aspects of the scoreboard and ultimately, what the vision was for our new board in Mackal," said Sperry. "The University and the Department of Athletics gratefully appreciate the significant gift that Aleck Slade has given to the men's and women's track and field programs. The Aleck Slade scoreboard will enhance the competitive experience for the student-athletes and create an environment that enriches the fan experience."
Thoughts from the Coaches:
Men's Track and Field Head Coach John Copeland:
"We are very excited about the new Daktronics scoreboard. It will make track meets extremely enjoyable for fans, spectators, athletes and officials. We will be able to display results almost immediately after events conclude. Team scores will be available throughout the meet and that will add suspense to the outcome of the meets. We owe a special thank you to the Slade family, Art Tuveson and Gina Sperry for getting the project done for the 2015 Indoor Track season.
Women's Track and Field Head Coach Laurie Feit-Melnick:
"We are thrilled to have a new Daktronics scoreboard in Mackal Fieldhouse! Thank you to the Slade family for making the scoreboard possible. The scoreboard will enhance our facility and especially enhance the Indoor Atlantic 10 Track and Field Championship!"
