KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island senior James Strawderman had a strong showing in the pole vault competition at the NCAA East Preliminaries Friday evening, but just missed qualifying for the NCAA Finals. Freshman Jacob Reilly also competed in the high jump at the prelims.

Competing at the East Prelims in Jacksonville, Fla. for the second straight year, Strawderman cleared 5.15 meters (16'10 ¾) and finished 15th out of a field of 48 qualifiers. He out-performed his seeding by a considerable margin. Entering the meet, Strawderman was seeded 23rd overall, meaning he improved his positioning by eight spots.

Strawderman – who placed 17th at the prelims last spring – just missed a spot in the NCAA Finals, which will be held in Eugene, Ore. The top 12 finishers advanced to the national finals. Cincinnati freshman Adrian Valles claimed the 12th spot with his height of 5.25m (17'2 ¾). Strawderman, Navy's Mark Vetere, LSU's Andreas Duplantis, Kent State's Jesse Oxley and Eastern Tennessee State's Brett Squibbs all finished one notch below Valles at a height of 5.15m.

Reilly was one of six entrants to tie for 33rd overall in the men's high jump field of 48. Making his debut at the prelims, Reilly cleared 2.04m (6'8 ¼). Sophomore Jack Kahrs qualified for the high jump as well, but did not compete.
