KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's track & field team will be sending four athletes to Jacksonville, Fla. next week for the NCAA East Preliminaries. The qualifying athletes include junior sprinter Jalen Young, senior pole vaulter James Strawderman, freshman thrower Mahlik Handley and freshman thrower Nick Danner.
Young qualified for the 200-meter dash in the Atlantic 10 Championship where he rinished the race in 21.15. He currently stands in 46th in the East. This will be his second consective year competing in the preliminaries but last year he was in the 400-meter dash.
Strawderman got into the preliminaries with a strong mark of 5.20m (17' 0.75") in the pole vault at the Brown Springtime Open on April 27. This will be his first time competing in NCAA preliminaries.
The freshman Mahlik Handley will be competing in the hammer throw. His best throw of the season in the event was at the IC4A championship last weekend with a throw of 60.12m (197' 3").
Danner, also a freshman, will be throwing the javelin and had his best performance of the season in the Atlantic 10 Championships where he threw 67.52m (221' 6").
All four will need to make it into the top 12 in their resceptive events if they are to continue on to the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. A full list of participants in the NCAA East Men's Preliminaries can be found here.
