Baltzell Earns Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor

KINGSTON, R.I.Trent Baltzell was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Performer of the Week, the league office announced on Monday, April 16.

The red-shirt sophomore from Sutton, Mass. became the first student-athlete in URI history to earn more than 7,000 points in a decathlon, as he scored 7,062 en route to his second-place finish at the UConn Husky Decathlon April 10 to 11.

On day one of the two-day competition, Baltzell led the Rams in fourth overall with 3,638 points. He finished first in the shot put (13.56m) and in the high jump (2.06m) for 701 and 859 points, respectively. He placed seventh in the 400m dash (52.10), 10th in the long jump (6.33m) and 11th in the 100m dash (11.76).

Finishing out the meet, Baltzell placed first in the discus throw (43.22m), second in the javelin throw (55.13m) and the 1500m (4:39.27), seventh in the pole vault (3.95m) and 10th in the 100m hurdles (15.93) to round out his performance for second.
