Rhode Island Leads After Day One of Atlantic 10 Championship

Day One Results

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After day one of competition, Rhode Island leads the way at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

The Rams have compiled 79 points after nine scored events and have earned several first-place finishes.

Rainford Thomas, Trent Baltzell and Rob Damon finished 1-2-3, respectively in the high jump. Thomas cleared the bar at 6-8 1/4 (2.04m), to sweep the conference high jump titles. The Philadelphia, Pa. native also won the 2011 A-10 indoor high jump, clearing the same height. Baltzell and Damon each passed the height of 6-6 1/4 (1.99m), to sweep the medal stand for URI.

Jacob Keeling captured the gold medal in the javelin, with a throw of 200-11 (61.25m). It was his first-ever A-10 javelin title and second career A-10 individual championship (indoor shot put, 2011). Winthrop Smith (7th, 54.57m) and Trent Baltzell (8th, 53.31m) also scored for URI.

Rhode Island also earned valuable points in the pole vault. Jame Kida, James Strawderman, and Jordan Burandt finished 2-3-4, respectively. Kida and Strawderman each cleared the bar at 15-3 (4.65m), while Burandt vaulted 14-9 (4.50m).

William Janes led the way for the Rams in the hammer throw. Janes placed second overall with a toss of 188-2 (57.35m). Thaddeus Kusiak was fifth, registering a mark of 181-5 (55.30m) and Justin Nicoll sixth with a throw of 169-11 (51.80m).

In other events, Ronald Woodley placed fifth in the long jump, with a leap of 22-9 (6.93m). Nour Shahin finished fifth in the discus, with a heave of 145-7(44.39m).
