BOSTON, MA - The University of Rhode Island men's track & field team recorded a runner-up finish at the 2011 New England Championships held this weekend at the BU Track and Tennis Center.
The University of Connecticut won the championship with 119.5 points while Rhody was the runner-up with 61.5 points. Southern Connecticut State was third 58.5 points, followed by Central Connecticut (57.5) and Northeastern (52) to round out the top five.
In the field events, senior Jacob Keeling posted a runner-up finish in the shot put with a mark of 16.83m and recorded a toss of 17.01m in the weight throw to finish seventh. Meanwhile, Andrew Piscitelli was seventh in the shot put (15.63m) while William Janes was 11th in the weight throw (16.84m).
After winning the triple jump at last weekend's A-10 Championships, sophomore Ronald Woodley was victorious once again as he posted a mark of 15.41m. In the pole vault, freshman James Strawderman had one of his best performances of the season as he finished second with a mark of 4.90m.
Senior David Kennedy beat out 28 other competitors to claim the 500m dash title in a time of 1:02.99. Kennedy was also sixth in the 200m dash (21.85).
Rhody posted a fifth place finish in the 4x400m relay as Cameron Cormier, Manuel Richards, Andrew Reigstad and Kennedy recorded a time of 3:16.18. Meanwhile, Dan Shears, Stephen McKenna, Michael Cook and Nate Wigton teamed-up to post a seventh place finish in the 4x800m relay in a time of 7:46.14.
Rhode Island will be back in action next Saturday-Sunday, March 5th-6th to take part in the IC4A Championships. The meet begins at 10 a.m. in Boston.
