KINGSTON, R.I.- The University of Rhode Island men's track & field team took first place at the 2011 URI Sorlien Memorial Invitational at Mackal Field House on Saturday afternoon.
As a team, URI finished with 276.50, which was over 150 points ahead of second place finisher, UMass-Amherst (117.50). UMass-Dartmouth followed in third with 74 points, while Bryant was fourth (64 points), Holy Cross fifth (55 points) and Brown sixth (44 points).
Nicholas Guscott got Rhody started in the opening event as he posted an IC4A qualifying mark on the way to a first place finish in the 55m dash in a time of 6.46.
Senior David Kennedy also earned a spot at the IC4A Championships as he posted a qualifying mark of 48.94 as he won the 400m dash. In the 500m dash, Anthony Davidson placed first with a time of 1:05.08, good for an IC4A qualifying mark.
In the field events, Jamie Kida posted an impressive mark of 4.96m in the pole vault, easily qualifying him for the IC4A Championships. Rainford Thomas posted an IC4A qualifying mark in the high jump as he took first place with a mark of 2.04m. In the weight throw, William Janes also posted an IC4A qualifying mark as he took first place with a mark of 16.96m.
Rhode Island will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 22nd as they travel to Annapolis, MD for the U.S. Navy Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
