BOSTON, Mass. - The Rhode Island men's track and field team placed second at the 2010 New England Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday afternoon at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
Junior Derek Kennedy led the way for the Rams as he won the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 47.32. Kennedy also took runner-up in the 200m dash as he timed a 21.66.
Fellow junior Nicholas Sanborn also posted a top three finish as he placed third in the 500m in a time of 1:03.49. Sanborn just missed winning the event as he finished just behind New Hampshire's Sean Mitchell, who clocked a time of 1:03.39 to place first.
Kennedy and Sanborn also ran the third and fourth legs of Rhody's 4x400-meter relay team, which clocked a time of 3:17.52 to place third. Sophomore Anthony Chierici and senior Rob Damon ran the first and second legs of the relay.
Senior captain James Whalen and junior Jacob Keeling also turned in strong performances. Whalen took fourth in the heptathlon (4554 points), while Keeling finished runner-up in the weight throw (59 feet, 2.75 inches).
The Rams will return to action next weekend (March 6-7) for the IC4A Championships at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
