Richards Places Fourth, Whalen Fifth at Holy Cross Decathlon

WORCESTER, Mass. - University of Rhode Island freshman Manuel Richards placed fifth at the Holy Cross Decathlon while sophomore James Whalen finished sixth Thursday afternoon.

Richards (Fair Haven, Vt.) recorded a time of 16.78in the 110m hurdles and a time of 4:39.76 in the 1500m. In the field events, Richards recorded a throw of 96-04 in the discus and 137-05 in the javelin while posting a pole vault of 11-11.75. He finished with a final point total of 5,841.

Whalen (Sinkling Spring, Pa.), meanwhile, ran the 110m hurdles in 16.62 and the 1500m in 5:08.29. He threw the discus 96-10, the javelin 140-05, and registered a pole vault of 12-11.50. He finished with a final point total of 5,811.

Mike Miller of Springfield College won the decathlon with a point total of 6,481, followed by James Spaulding (Southern Maine) with 6,251 points and Ben Roy (Worcester Polytech) with 5,861 points.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they compete at the UConn Invitational in Storrs, Conn. The event is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
