Rams Capture First Place at Boston Indoor Games

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Rhode Island men's indoor track & field team captured first-place at the 2008 Reebok Boston Indoor Games Friday evening. The Rams finished with 132 points, well ahead of second-place Northeastern, which finished with 88.

Junior Dan Hawkins (Cranston, R.I.) captured a win in the one mile event for the Rams, finishing first with a time of 4:33.92 in Heat 1. Sophomore Nathan Ruchames (Binghamton, N.Y.), meanwhile, won Heat No. 3 in the one mile event with a time of 4:22.16. Senior Thomas Barek (Portsmouth, R.I.) notched a first-place finish in Heat No. 2 of the 800m with a time of 1:59.19

Senior Yudehwheh Gbaa (Providence, R.I.) won the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.58 also took first place in the triple jump in Flight No. 2 with a score of 14.87m. Sophomore Shawn Leonard (Stoughton, Mass.) won the high jump with a score of 1.98m while freshman David Kennedy (Essex Junction, Vt.) also notched a win, his coming in Heat No. 7 of the 400m dash with a time of 49.95. Later, he earned a win in Heat No. 9 of the 200m dash with a time of 22.68.

In Flight No. 3, senior Michael Bernardo (South Attleboro, Mass.) picked up a win in the weight throw with a score of 17.86m and classmate Ryan McCarthy (Worcester, Mass.) was fourth with a throw of 16.05m. McCarthy also won the shot put with a throw of 16.91m, followed by sophomore Tyler Adams (Newport, R.I.) in second place (15.17m), freshman Jacob Keeling (Chepachet, R.I.) in third place (14.92m), and sophomore Gregory Borrelli (Hamden, Conn.) in fourth place (14.56m). All four competed in Flight No. 3.

Junior John Carstensen (Staten Island, N.Y.) placed third in the pole vault with a jump of 4.45m and freshman Manuel Richards (Fair Haven, Vt.) took second in the Heat No. 3 of the 500m dash with a mark of 1:08.32.

The Rams 4x400m relay team also captured first place with a time of 3:21.50 in Heat No. 2. They return to action on Friday, Feb. 1 when they host the Rhody Mega Meet, which begins at 5 p.m.
