GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Ashhad Agyapong has qualified for the 100m and 200m events at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. It marks the first time in history that a URI runner has qualified for two events in the same NCAA championship meet.

Agyapong earned an automatic spot in the field of the 200m at the NCAA Championship by virtue of his fifth place finish at the NCAA East Regional Championship on Saturday, May 26. The East Regionals were held at the University of Florida on May 25-26.

In the 200m, Agyapong placed fifth overall, clocking 20.72 seconds. Florida State's Walter Dix took top honors in this event, registering a time of 19.69 seconds - a collegiate best, passing the previous mark of 19.75 by Joe DeLoach in 1988. It marks the second time Agyapong has qualified for the national championship meet. He also earned a spot in the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in the 200m. He placed 13th in the preliminary heats.

He also qualified for a trip to the national championship in the 100m. Agyapong ran 10.40 in the trials and 10.64 in the finals for sixth place at the East Regional. That sixth spot has also made the NCAA selection list. Currently, Agyapong is nationally-ranked 11th in the 100m and 20th in the 200m.

The 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship will be held at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the campus of Sacramento State.
