STORRS, Conn. -- The Rhode Island men's outdoor track & field team competed at the UCon Invitational this afternoon in Storrs, Conn. URI finished third in the team standings, with 97 points. Host UConn tallied 243 points to win, followed by Brown (105).
Derek Peterson led three Rams in the top four in the discus throw. Peterson won the event with a throw of 174'02" (53.10m). Ryan McCarthy was third overall, with a heave of 147'5" (44.94m), followed by Tyler Adams (145'4"/44.31m).
Michael Bland finished fourth in the 100m dash (10.75), while teammate Jeffry Martins was sixth (11.13). Bland and Martins were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200m. Bland clocked 21.94 seconds, while Martins finished in 22.15. Brendan Lamboy was seventh, clocking 22.40. Desmond Brown was sixth in the 400m, with a time of 50.80.
Rhody's 4x100m relay finished third overall in a time of 43.69, while in the 4x400m relay the Rams were second (3:27.96).
In the field events, Michael Elliott finished fourth in the high jump, clearing a height of 6'1.25" (1.86m). Three Rhody athletes scored in the shot put, led by Ryan McCarthy's fifth place finish (51'0.75"/15.56m). Derek Peterson was sixth, with a toss of 49'1.75" (14.98m) and Tyler Adams was seventh with a throw of 48'8.75" (14.85m).
Michael Bernardo placed second in the hammer throw, with a toss of 183'5" (55.92m). Ryan McCarthy was second in the javelin (189'7"/57.80m), followed by teammate Mason Folcarelli in fourth place (167'8"/51.10m).
The Rams return to action when they travel to the University of Virginia Invitational on April 13-14 in Charlottesville, Va.
