Men's Indoor Track & Field Competes at Armory Winter Games

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Rhode Island men's indoor track & field squad competed in the Armory Winter Games on Friday, Feb. 9. Eight different Rams combined for seven first place finishes in six individual events and one relay.

 

Seniors Ashhad Agyapong, who captured the 200m dash (21.23, IC4A-qualifying mark), and LaeJon Brooks, who won the 60m hurdles (8.08) teamed with junior Stephen Mateka and sophomore Kimly May for a first-place finish in the 4x400m relay (3:19.33, IC4A-qualifying mark).

 

Sophomore Shawn Leonard placed first in the high jump (6-05.00) while junior Yudehwheh Gbaa took the triple jump with an IC4A-qualifying and conference-leading 50-01.00 leap.

 

URI also finished on top in both throws events as junior Ryan McCarthy won the shot put with a conference-leading 55-07.50 throw and classmate Michael Bernardo won the weight throw with a 58-11.25 toss. Both distances were IC4A-qualifying marks while McCarthy's performance moved him to No. 2 all-time at URI.

 

Other notable performances included personal-bests from sophomores John Carstensen and Matthew Cunningham and freshman Tyler Adams and Travis Cox. Carstensen qualified for the IC4A's with a 15-9.00 in the pole vault while Cunningham turned in a 2:33.54 in the 1,000m run. Adams and Cox each finished fourth in the shot put (51-04.00) and weight throw (50-11.00), respectively.

 

The Rams return to action on Saturday, February 17, when they host the Atlantic 10 Championships, set to begin at 9:15 a.m.
