KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island men's track & field team won the nine-team Rhody Mega Meet on Saturday in Mackal Field House to finish the regular season undefeated with a 28-0 record.
Rhode Island scored 214 points to run away with its third scoring meet of the winter, moving the Rams head-to-head record to 28-0. Southern Connecticut State finished a distant second with 131 points, while New Hampshire took third (102), Massachusetts was fourth (82) and Brown was fifth (64). Quinnipiac took sixth (25), Hartford was seventh (16), followed by New Haven (6) and Central Connecticut (9).
The defending Atlantic 10 Champion Rams will compete in the non-scoring Boston University Valentine's Invitational on Friday and Saturday, the final tune-up before hosting the A10 Championship on Feb. 19 in Mackal Field House.
Seniors Sean Bramley (New Paltz, N.Y.), Taylor Majewski (Warwick, N.Y.), Andre' Reid (South Windsor, Conn.) and Luis Rodrigues (Pawtucket, R.I.) were honored earlier in the day, before competing in the last regular season meet of their career in Mackal Field House.
All four seniors scored, led by Reid, who won the shot put with a throw of 57-feet-1 and placed second in the weight throw with a heave of 53-1 1/2. Bramley placed fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 47-6, Majewski took fifth in the pole vault, clearing 14-3 1/4, and Rodrigues finished sixth in the 500 in 1:07.62.
Sophomore Denis Street (Slate Hill, N.Y.) won the long jump, reaching 23-0 3/4 and took second place in the triple jump (44-11 3/4). Junior Eric Groce (Rutland, Vt.) won the 200 dash in 22.41 seconds and took thrid in the 55 dash in 6.58. Sophomore Darnell Douglas (Delmar, N.Y.) won the 400 in 49.45 seconds and was the runner-up in the 200 in 22.67 seconds.
Sophomore Ashhad Agyapong (Trenton, N.J.), who has won the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honors in each of the last two weeks, took first in both events he took part in Saturday. Agyapong ran a 1:06.27 to win the 500 dash and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x400 relay team, joining freshman Brendan Lamboy (Warwick, R.I.), Groce and Douglas.
Sophomore Dan Godin (Coventry, R.I.) won the weight throw with a toss of 57-7 3/4. Sophomore LaeJon Brooks (West Orange, N.J.) won the 55 hurdles in 7.71 seconds, while sophomore Bremen deHaan (Galloway, N.J.) took second (7.86) and sophomore Christopher Adams (Selden, N.Y.) placed third (7.87). DeHaan also finished fifth in the long jump, leaping 21-2 1/2.
Senior Evan Lima (Warwick, R.I.) took second in the high jump, clearing 6-7 and freshman David Delude (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished fifth (6-3 1/4). Lima also notched a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (43-7).
Junior Adam Zucconi (Marlton, N.J.) was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 14-9 and freshman Sutton Underwood (Norwalk, Conn.) placed fourth (14-3 1/4). Junior Robert Johnson (Rumford, R.I.) placed third in the 400 in 50.06 seconds. Sophomore Dennis Sheppard (East Bridgewater, Mass.) finished fourth in the 800 in 1:57.69.
