KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore Ashhad Agyapong (Trenton, N.J.) won two events and finished third in another to score 26 points in leading the University of Rhode Island men's track & field team to victory in the "Sparks" Sorlien Memorial Invitational on Friday afternoon in Mackal Field House.
The Rams scored 158 points to win the eight-team meet named in honor of longtime University of Rhode Island professor and track enthusiast Robert "Sparks" Sorlien. Pennsylvania finished second with 134 points, 24 behind the Rams, and Brown placed third with 123 points. Connecticut took fourth (118), Maine was fifth (59), Central Connecticut State finished sixth (30), followed by Quinnipiac (20) and Stony Brook (18).
"I'm very impressed with the competitiveness our athletes showed, specifically Andre' Reid, Ashhad Agyapong, Chris Adams, Evan Lima and Dan Godin," Rhode Island head coach John Copeland said. "We were beat up, sick and just not ready for this meet. The kids really did a good job today."
Agyapong won the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.99 seconds and finished first in the 400 dash in 48.40 seconds. He placed third in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.56 seconds.
Senior Andre' Reid (South Windsor, Conn.), the reigning Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week, won the shot put with a toss of 57-3.75 and took second in the weight throw with a heave of 55-2.75. Sophomore Dan Godin (Coventry, R.I.) won the weight throw with a toss of 57-8.25.
Senior Evan Lima (Warwick, R.I.) took second in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 8.25 inches, and finished third in the triple jump in 44-8.75. Junior Adam Zucconi (Marlton, N.J.) placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 14-9, while freshman Sutton Underwood (Norwalk, Conn.) took fourth and freshman Sean Strizzi (Latham, N.Y.) finished fifth, each clearing 14-3.25.
Sophomore LaeJon Brooks (West Orange, N.J.) finished third in the 55 hurdles in 7.79 seconds and sophomore Christopher Adams (Selden, N.Y.) followed in fourth place in 7.82 seconds. Adams also placed third in the long jump, with a leap of 22-3.50.
Senior Sean Bramley (New Paltz, N.Y.) placed third in the shot put with a throw of 50-4 and freshman Ryan McCarthy (Worcester, Mass.) finished fifth (45-3). Sophomore Paul Chobanian (Providence, R.I.) took fifth in the weight throw (50-6) and junior Eric Groce (Rutland, Vt.) took fifth in the 55 dash (6.59).
The Rams return to action on Friday at the Adidas Boston Indoor Games at 6:00 p.m.
