KINGSTON, R.I. - The URI Men's Track & Field team and their coaches once again hosted a youth 'Field Day'. Over seventy-five 4th, 5th and 6th grade students from the West Kingston Elementary School participated in an afternoon of hands-on sports fun at the Mackal Field House Track Complex on April 8. The Field Day has now been conducted for several years.
URI track team members volunteered their time to work with the youngsters. Ben Carroll and Sean Bramley worked with youth in the shot event. Jamie Finneran demonstrated the techniques of the javelin. Hurdles were set up by Raheim McDaniel and Matt Lyons as Dom Murgo worked on sprint starts. One of the most popular events was the long jump manned by Evan Lima and Dustin Bilbruck.
The afternoon concluded with all 75 children participating in a relay race.
"This day has always been one of the highlights of our season. It gives us a great opportunity to not only expose many children to the sport of track & field, but also, to allow our student-athletes to give back to the community in a unique way. " said Coach Copeland.
