KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshman Andre Reid (South Windsor, Conn.) was named an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the week as well as a Performer of the Week after his performances this weekend at the Tennessee hosted Sea Ray Relays on Friday and Saturday.
The Performer of the Week honor comes as a first for Reid, while for the second time in the 2002-2003 season Reid has earned the Rookie of the Week award.
Reid took eighth place in the shot put with his throw of 54'4", not only qualifying for NCAA Regional competition, but topping the Atlantic 10's previous high of 53-5 3/4 and setting a new school record.
In addition to his shot put performance Reid threw for sixth place in the discus with a throw of 155-06.
In high school Reid won all-New England, all-Connecticut, and all-CIAC accolades in 2001. He was crowned champion at the invite-only Golden West Invitational in California as well as playing linebacker and running back for the school's football team.
The Sea Ray Relays were a non-scoring meet, and only seven Rams attended. The remainder of the team headed to the Brown Invitational where they placed sixth out of nine teams with a score of 53.
The Rhode Island Men's Track and Field team will be back in action this Saturday, April 19th, when they travel to Bucknell along with Kent State and R. Morris to compete in the Bucknell Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
