KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island men's track and field head coach John Copeland was named as the 2001 United States Track Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year. He will be honored on March 8th at the Coaches Banquet, held in conjunction with the NCAA Championships in Arkansas.
This marks the third time that Copeland has been named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year, earning the award in 1989 and again 1997. Copeland, who is in his 19th season at the helm of the URI track program, was named the 2001 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year after guiding the Rams to their first conference indoor championship ever in February. During his illustrious career, the Rams mentor has coached 72 individual New England Champions and led the team to a pair of New England Championships.
Copeland attributes much of his success to his right hand man, assistant coach Derek Yush. "Derek has been an integral part of this team and helped push us over the top for our first Atlantic 10 Championship."
