Former Rhody Quarterback Derek Cassidy Joins AFL's VooDoo

KINGSTON, R.I. - Former Rhode Island quarterback Derek Cassidy (2005-2008) signed a contract on Wednesday with the Arena Football League's New Orleans VooDoo.

Cassidy (6-2, 205 lbs.) will compete for a roster spot in training camp. The VooDoo will be the first professional experience for Cassidy as he will enter training camp as a rookie. He will dress in jersey number 12 during training camp.

Cassidy ranks third at URI in career passing yards (5,005) and touchdown passes (31). As a senior he completed 261-of-440 passes for 2,759 yards and 15 touchdowns.

During his senior campaign, Cassidy threw for 436 yards against No. 10 New Hampshire which ranks seventh all-time for a single game. Three weeks later against in-state rival Brown, Cassidy tossed a career-high five touchdowns to lead the Rams to a 37-13 victory. His five touchdown passes in a single game is tied for second all-time at URI.
