Gavek Named CAA Defensive Player of the Week

KINGSTON, R.I. - Redshirt sophomore Malik Gavek has been named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in Saturday's 42-14 victory over Merrimack.

In just his second start, Gavek recorded a career-high 14 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and he returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown in Rhode Island's 42-14 victory over the Warriors. The interception return gave the Rams a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter. Both fumble recoveries - one of which Gavek forced - came inside the URI 5-yard line, stopping scoring drives. The 14 tackles matched the most by a URI player this season.

In his two career starts, Gavek has 18 tackles, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and 1.5 tackles for loss. He had 14 career tackles and no career turnovers in his first 10 career games.

This is the third weekly CAA Football honor for the Rams this season. Wide receiver Aaron Parker was the league's Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9, and quarterback Vito Priore earned the same honor on Oct. 7
