Rams Come Up Short Against Brown

Rhode Island (0-5) played its strongest game of the season, but could not keep up with Brown, as the Bears took a 17-7 victory in the annual Governor's Cup battle Saturday.

Brown (3-1) scored the first two touchdowns of the game, getting a 6-yard scoring rush from Cody Taulbee with 7:01 remaining in the first quarter. Taulbee added his second touchdown of the day on a 10-yard rush with 11:04 left in the second quarter. That score was set up by a Rhody turnover that gave the Bears the ball at the Rhode Island 22-yard line.

Rhode Island got a 3-yard touchdown run from quarterback Bob Bentsen with just 15 seconds to go before halftime to close within 14-7. The Rams were unable to get any closer.

Senior Brandon Johnson-Farrell moved into third place on the school's all-time receiving list. He caught 10 passes Saturday, giving him 173 for his career. He passed Dameon Reilly (165) with his third catch of the game.
Quarterback Bob Bentsen passed for a season-best 193 yards. The 3-yard rushing touchdown was the second of his career.
As a team, the Rams gained 91 yards on the ground, the second straight week they have topped 90. That includes a 14-yard loss that came as the result of an errant snap.
Linebacker Doug Johnson led the defense with 13 tackles, matching the career high he set against James Madison. He also had two tackles for loss.
Rhode Island's offense gained a season-high 19 first downs.
Rhode Island's defense allowed a season-low 16 first downs.

The Rams were shut out in the second half for the fourth time this season.


Rhode Island has its second straight home game when it hosts CAA Football rival Georgia State Saturday, Oct. 13.
