Rhode Island Ranked #24 on USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll

2016-17 USA Today Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll

KINGSTON, R.I. --  Rhode Island earned the No. 24 spot in the preseason USA Today Coaches poll, marking a return to the national polls for the first time in 18 years.  The Rams are the lone Atlantic 10 representative on the top 25 poll.  Dayton, VCU, and Davidson each received votes.

One Rhody non-conference opponent is also ranked, No. 25 Cincinnati. URI and UC face off in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament on Nov. 19 at the Mohegan Sun Arena.  No. 1 ranked Duke is also in the tournament field.

The Blue Devils earned 27-of-32 first-place votes. Kansas, Villanova, Kentucky, and Oregon, round out the top five.  North Carolina, Virginia, Xavier, Michigan State and Wisconsin are among the top 10, respectively.

Rhode Island earned 85 votes for the No. 24 spot.  Creighton sits at No. 23, with 113 points.

It marks the first time that Rhode Island is ranked on either the USA Today Coaches or Associated Press preseason top 25 poll since the 1998-99 season.  The AP preseason poll is scheduled to be released on October 31.

The Rams were picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, announced this past Tuesday at the league's Media Day in Pittsburgh.  Rhody returns four of five starters from a season ago and welcomes back guard E.C. Matthews, who missed the 2015-16 season due to injury.
