Rhode Island Picked Second; Matthews & Martin Honored by Atlantic 10

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Rhode Island was picked to finish second and E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin were selected to the preseason all-conference team, it was announced today at Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball media day, held at PPG Paints Center in Pittsburgh - site of the 2017 A-10 Championship.

It marked the second consecutive season - and third instance in program history - that Rhody was picked as high as second in the Atlantic 10.

The Rams received 12 out of a possible 28 first-place votes and 370 points overall.  Dayton was picked first on the preseason poll, conducted by the league's 14 head coaches and selected media from each member school.  The Flyers sit atop the poll with 16 first-place votes and 374 total points.  VCU (340 points), Davidson (302), and St. Bonaventure (246) round out the top five of the poll.

Matthews and Martin were each selected to league's preseason all-conference second team.  Matthews returns to the floor after a knee injury that sidelined him last season.  The 6-5 guard tore his ACL just 10 minutes into the first half of the 2015-16 regular season opener against American on Nov. 13.  He was a 2015-16 Preseason First Team All-A-10 pick and was tabbed as the league's preseason Player of the Year by several national outlets.  The Detroit native had surgery on Dec. 14, 2015 and was fully cleared for action in late August.

Martin, the 2015-16 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, has led the league in blocked shots in each of his first three collegiate seasons.  The 6-7 senior also suffered through an injury-plagued 2015-16 campaign, missing five games - including the final four contests of the year.  The Staten Island native averaged 12.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and shot 57.1% from the floor.  He needs 80 blocks to become URI's all-time career leader, passing Kenny Green (328 blocks, 1985-90).
