KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island redshirt freshman Justin Cherry has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office. It marks the first weekly honor of his career, as well as URI's first of the 2019 season.
Cherry recorded 13 strikeouts while allowing just four hits and one walk over 9.2 innings of work this past week. Through two appearances, he combined for a 0.00 ERA while holding opponents to a .125 batting average.
The right-handed pitcher led Rhode Island to a 4-0 victory at Davidson on Sunday, striking out 11 in a 7.2-inning start and throwing five consecutive 1-2-3 innings. The Wildcats - who currently lead the A-10 in home runs - managed to hit just two balls out of the infield through the first six innings. He issued his only walk of the game with two away in the seventh. Davidson eventually got runners to second and third, but Cherry ended the threat with an inning-ending strikeout - his 10th of the game.
The Stafford, Va. native also struck out two in two innings of no-hit relief at Boston College on Tuesday and recorded an RBI single while playing shortstop in Wednesday's game against Holy Cross.
Rhode Island returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Bryant.
