KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island right handed pitcher Taso Stathopoulos has signed with the Gateway Grizzlies, joining classmates Tyler Barss and Matt Murphy in the midwest-based Frontier League. As previously announced, Barss and Murphy both secured roster spots with the Traverse City Beach Bums.
Stathopoulos, who made 40 pitching appearances throughout his collegiate career, spent his first two years as a reliever before missing the 2016 season with an injury. When he finally returned to the mound in 2017, he took on a starting role and eventually worked his way into the weekend rotation.
This past season, the Flushing, N.Y. native posted a career-best 1.95 ERA, which was tops among all Atlantic 10 starting pitchers.
Highlighting Stathopoulos' outstanding senior season was a 7.0-inning start at No. 1 Florida, where he held the top-ranked Gators to just four hits and one (unearned) run. He was then sidelined with an injury for the second half of March, but still finished the year with a 4-1 record.
Stathopoulos is the fourth player from Rhody's 2018 roster to continue on to a professional career. In addition to Barss and Murphy signing with Traverse City, Nick Johnson was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 21st round (618th pick overall) of this year's MLB Draft.
