KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshmen Jackson Coutts and Xavier Vargas have been named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, in voting conducted among the league's 13 head coaches. Coutts also collected All-Conference Second Team accolades, effectively being identified as the A-10's second-best designated hitter this season.
A native of Orono, Maine, Coutts finished his freshman season leading the Rams with a team-best .310 batting average. He also led URI in conference play with 27 hits, 11 walks, 14 RBI and 13 runs scored against A-10 opponents. Overall, he had 10 multi-hit games and reached base safely in each of Rhode Island's last 36 games.
Vargas, who also earned Atlantic Rookie of the Week honors on May 14, appeared in 34 games and made 28 starts during his first season with the Rams. Ten of his 24 hits on the year were for extra bases as he finished with six doubles, three triples and one home run. Defensively, the Woodhaven, N.Y. product committed just two errors in 228 total chances for a .991 fielding percentage.
