KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island sophomore Steve Moyers has been named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, following his complete game shutout win over VCU on Sunday. It marks the second A-10 weekly honor of Moyers' young career as he also earned Rookie of the Week accolades last season.
In his first collegiate complete game, the Rhody southpaw allowed the nation's eighth-best offense just one hit through the first eight innings of play and handed VCU its first shutout loss of the season (41 games). After VCU managed back-to-back singles in the top of the ninth, Moyers initiated a 1-6-3 double play to end the threat, as well as the game.
He finished the day with three assists from the mound and struck out five while issuing just one walk. Moyers never faced more than four batters in an inning.
Additionally, the East Longmeadow, Mass. native held VCU - the A-10's top hitting team - to a .103 average on the afternoon – 211 points below what it had entered the three-game series hitting (.314).
Moyers has now lowered his ERA in each of his last five weekend starts (1-2, two no-decisions), going from 4.24 to 2.17 over that span. In four Atlantic 10 appearances, he boasts an 0.93 ERA - tops in the conference - with 21 strikeouts and just two walks over 29.0 innings pitched.
