BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Rhode Island senior closer Luke Demko (Gilford, N.H.) was named to the midseason watch list for the fifth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award, announced on April 16th. The award is presented to the nation's top relief pitcher.
Demko broke URI's single-season save record in the Rams' 3-1 win over UConn and currently leads the Atlantic 10 with 11 saves on the season. That total also ties him for seventh in the nation.
Demko joins 44 other NCAA Division I baseball players on the midseason watch list. He is the lone pitcher from the Atlantic 10 Conference while the ACC leads the was with seven players on the list.
The watch list was compiled from nominations submitted by sports information contacts and conference media relations offices nationwide. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 3, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional play.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced Saturday, June 13, before the opening of NCAA College World Series.
