Ryan Mattison is entering his second season with Rhode Island in2013. He joined head coach Joe Trainer's staff as the defensivebacks coach on Feb. 27, 2012.

In his first season, Mattison coached Third-Team All-CAA Footballhonoree Jamaal Bess, who had 44 tackles and broke up four passes in2012. Sophomore defensive back Tim Wienclaw started every game andwas second on the team with 58 tackles. 

Mattison came to Rhode Island from Bowdoin College, where he wasthe secondary coach, video coordinator and recruiting coordinator.His unit helped the Polar Bear defense rank second in total passdefense and third in pass defense efficiency in the New EnglandSmall College Athletic Conference in 2011.

Mattison has coaching ties throughout New England. In addition toBowdoin, he has coached at Boston College (graduate assistant,2007-10), Holy Cross (assistant secondary coach (2005-07) andAssumption (secondary, 2004-05). During his playing career,Mattison was a walk-on at Boston College who eventually earned afull scholarship and two varsity letters with the Eagles.

He and his wife Allison reside in Wakefield, R.I.
