Box Score How It Happened
A dominant pitching performance and a matter of inches was the difference as Boston College beat Rhode Island 3-1 Saturday morning at the Owl Classic.
Boston College starter Halie Pappion flirted with a no-hitter as she outdueled Rhode Island's
Katie Zaun in a quality showdown. Pappion (3-1) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and struck out six over 6.0 innings of work.
Rhody's Zaun (0-2) kept the Rams (1-7) close, as she hurled 6.0 innings, allowing just three runs on five hits. Two of the runs came in the top of the third on a two-run homer off the bat of Hannah Slike. The shot just went off the foul pole down the leftfield line, helping put BC (9-4) ahead 3-0 at the time.
Riley Frickleton broke up Pappion's no-hit bid when she led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left center.
Elena Gonzalez followed with a line drive single to right, putting two runners on with nobody out. Both runners moved into scoring position on a groundout by
Leilyn Alvarez.
Cassie Swenson drove in Frickleton with a groundout.
Kylie Bulinski followed with a long fly ball to right, but it was caught at the wall to end the inning.
BC's A Dunning retired Rhody in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game and earn a save.
