Elliott Announces Newcomers for 2018 Season

KINGSTON, R.I. - Head coach Gareth Elliott has announced the addition of 11 student-athletes to the Rams’ roster for the 2018 season. The class of newcomers includes five international players hailing from four different countries, as well as six Americans coming from as close as West Kingston, R.I. to as far away as California.


BORIS BASARA - M/D - 5-11/175 - GRAZ, AUSTRIA/LIESE PROKOP PRIVATSCHULE

Chose to attend URI over Delaware, Georgia Southern, Northern Illinois and Elon… Selected Rhode Island because of the opportunity to play for a top-level program while getting a top-level education.

Before URI

  • Totaled 25 appearances for the Austrian Youth National Team from 2013-17.
  • Traveled to Bulgaria to compete in the 2015 U17 European Championship.
  • Scored nine goals in three seasons in the U18 OFB National Youth League.
  • Registered three goals and one assist in two seasons in the Austrian Regionalliga 3rd Division.
  • Played for the Admira Wacker Youth Academy from 2012-16 and Admira Wacker II from 2016-18.

  • Born Feb. 22, 1998.
  • Son of Amira and Branislav Basara.
  • Has a twin brother, Philipp, who also plays on the URI soccer team, and one older sister, Sara.

Elliott on Boris Basara: Boris is an experienced defender who has featured regularly for Austria at the Youth National Team level. His leadership skills and professional mentality should have an immediate impact on our program this fall.

Elliott on Philipp Basara: Philipp is an explosive attacking player who can play any of the front three positions. He will immediately compete for a starting role after scoring goals for Admira Wacker in both Austria's top U19 league and Austria's Regionalliga West.


ZACH COOK - M/F - 5-10/165 - NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I./NORTH KINGSTOWN

Chose to attend URI over George Mason and New Hampshire… Selected Rhode Island because of the prestige of the program, the coaching staff and the opportunity to pursue his education degree.

Before URI

  • Was a four-year member of the soccer team at North Kingstown High School, serving as team captain in both 2016 and 2017.
  • Helped lead his team to the 2017 Division I title as well as the 2014 State Championship title.
  • Was a four-time All-Division First Team selection.
  • Earned All-State Second Team accolades as a freshman and sophomore, and was an All-State First Team selection as a senior.
  • Also was named the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I Player of the Year his senior season, in addition to earning All-New England and Gatorade All-America honors.
  • Finished his high school career with 42 goals and 22 assists.
  • Played club soccer for NEFC (2009-16) and Rams FC (2016-18).
  • Was an honor roll student as well as a member of the Ski Club and the Business Club.

Elliott on Zach Cook: Zach is a local talent from North Kingstown who has had a ton of success at the high school and club levels. Leading the state in scoring this past fall, he can play up top or out wide, and will add immediate depth to our front line. We're excited to see him develop into one of the best attacking players in the Atlantic 10 over the next four years.


TREVOR DALTON - GK - 6-0/170 - NORWALK, CONN./NORWALK

Chose to attend URI over Massachusetts, Penn State, Ohio State, Temple, New Hampshire, San Diego State, Boston University and Quinnipiac… Based his decision on the fact that he felt most at home at Rhode Island... Was impressed with the academic opportunities and athletic facilities, as well as the community as a whole... Additionally, being a California native, being close to the beach was a necessity.

Before URI

  • Was a member of Beachside SC from sixth grade through his senior year of high school.
  • Started in approximately 60 USDA Academy games, making more than 250 saves and recording a .600 save percentage on penalties.
  • Recorded 12 saves and stopped two penalty kicks in a 2017 game against the New England Revolution's USSDA team.
  • Academically, was a member of the National Honor Society and was on the high honor roll every quarter throughout high school.
  • Also spent time volunteering at the Person-to-Person food pantry.

  • Born Aug. 24, 2000.
  • Son of Susan and Chris Dalton.
  • Has an older brother, Tyler.
  • Enjoys staying active, pool basketball and video games

  • Favorite teams are Manchester City, England Men's National Team, the New England Patriots, New York Islanders, New York Yankees and Boston Celtics.
  • Majoring in Journalism.
  • Would like to one day work for ESPN.

Elliott on Dalton: Trevor is a goalkeeper from Connecticut who played for Beachside SC in the US Soccer Developmental Academy. He has a great mentality, both in training and in games, and has developed into a good shot stopper. We expect Trevor to continue his development at URI and eventually push for playing time.


ZACH DRAYER - D - 5-10/150 - BUFFALO, N.Y./LANCASTER

Chose to attend URI over Yale, Rider, Carnegie Mellon, Colgate and Pittsburgh… Selected Rhode Island because of the campus' New England vibe and top-of-the-line facilities. Also was impressed by the coaching staff's vision and overall culture of the soccer program.

Before URI

  • Played center back, right back, left midfield and right midfield at Lancaster High School.
  • Was a member of the Empire United USDA U16, U18 and U19 club teams.
  • Started 17 of 24 games for the U18s in 2016-17, finishing with two goals.
  • Also was a started for the U19 team during the 2017-18 season.
  • Academically, earned his high school's Spanish Student of the Year and Social Studies Student of the Year awards in 2017.

Personal

  • Born Dec. 13, 1999.
  • Son of Mary Beth and Kevin Drayer.
  • Father was a member of the tennis team at SUNY Delhi.
  • Has three sisters: Chelsea, Gabrielle and Julia.
  • His uncle, Franklin Charles, played for the Houston Astros.
  • His cousin, Jonathan Schwind, currently plays in the Pittsburgh Pirates' farm system.

Elliott on Zach Drayer: Zach is a versatile, two-footed, wide player who has had a lot of success in the USDA playing for Empire United. His terrific work-rate and mentality will have an immediate impact on our program. We are excited to have him playing here at Rhody this fall. 


MICHAEL FALINO - D/M - 6-1/175 - LADERA RANCH, CALIF./TESORO

Chose to attend URI over Santa Clara, Pacific and Oregon State… Selected Rhode Island because of the amazing facilities and coaching staff... Wanted to be a part of the URI community and soccer program as both continue to progress.

Before URI

  • Was a member of the soccer team at Santa Margarita Catholic High School (Trinity League) as both a freshman and sophomore.
  • Started all 35 games during those two seasons, combining for 16 goals and 10 assists.
  • Was a two-time All-Trinity League selection.
  • Became his school's first-ever freshman to earn All-League accolades.
  • Played club soccer for Strikers FC U13/14 (2013-17) and Pateadores SC (2017-18).
  • Captained Strikers FC from 2013-16, as well as at the SuperCup (milk cup) of Northern Ireland.
  • Earned his high school's Academic Award for English 3 (2016-17).
  • Volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, as well as with the Special Olympics.

Elliott on Michael Falino: Michael is a versatile defender who featured regularly for Pateadores in the United States Development Academy. Pateadores SC continues to be one of the nation's top youth clubs as Michael's team was crowned the U18/19 West Division Champions. Michael has tremendous athletic upside and we are excited to watch him develop as a member of the Rhode Island men’s soccer team.


SONDRE KARTERUD - D - 6-1/170 - OSLO, NORWAY/UNIVERSITY OSLO MET

Chose URI because of the impressive soccer program as well as the University's school of business.

Before URI

  • Played for Lillestrøm SK (2013-16), Grorud IL (2016-17) and Skedsmo FK (2017-18).
  • Served as team captain for both his Lillestrøm and Skedsmo teams.
  • Scored 10 goals during his three seasons with Lillestrøm.
  • Received Player of the Year honors with Lillestrøm (B16) in 2012 and Lillestrøm (U19) in 2015.
  • Also was the Skedsmo Player of the Year in 2017.
  • Helped lead his team to the 2014 Norwegian Championship final.

  • Born May 14, 1996.
  • Son of Rune and Kari Høvik Karterud.
  • Has one brother, Sander, and two sisters Miriam and Martine.

Elliott on Sondre Karterud: Sondre is another Lillestrøm SK product that we are excited about. He is a tough, hard-nosed defender with terrific leadership qualities and will add instant depth to our back line. He is a very talented player who can help us bring another A-10 Championship to Kingston in the near future.


ROGER PENSKE - GK - 6-3/190 - NEWPORT COAST, CALIF./ST. MARGARET’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

Chose to attend URI over Michigan, the United States Air Force Academy, Cornell and Loyola Chicago… Selected Rhode Island because he fell in love with the soccer program, coaching staff and players... That, combined with the campus location, training facilities and educational opportunities, made URI the perfect fit.

Before URI

  • Played wide receiver for his high school's football team and served as a co-captain during his junior year.
  • Played club soccer for LA Galaxy USDA U15 (2014-15), Pateadores USDA U16/U17 (2015-17), Pateadores USDA U18 (2017-18).
  • Captained Pateadores during his final two seasons.
  • Traveled to Derbyshire, England (2015) and London, England (2016) for preseason training camp with Derby County FC (2015) and Watford FC (2016).
  • Received US Soccer Training Center invitations in 2014-15 and 2015-16.
  • Academically, was an honor roll student and received his high school's Scholastic Art & Writing awards.
  • Also volunteered at St. Margaret's Episcopal School's Special Camp for Special Kids, serving as a counselor for a 15 year old boy with muscular dystrophy and autism.

  • Son of Jennifer and Roger Penske, Jr.
  • His father played both football and soccer at Lehigh University.

  • Favorite athletes are Kobe Bryant, Neur, Neymar and Connor McGregor.
  • Favorite teams are Brazil Men's National Team, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.
  • Majoring in Business/Entrepreneurial Management.
  • Would like to pursue a career in professional soccer and eventually start his own company.
Elliott on Roger Penske: The starting goalkeeper for Pateadores in the USDA this past year, alongside teammate Mike Falino, Roger is another talented prospect from Southern California. He has a great frame for a keeper at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds. He has the ability to keep his team in every game with his great shot-stopping ability and dominance in the air. Roger will come in and push for the starting goalkeeper role immediately.

STEFAN SCHMIDT - GK - 6-1/190 - JENA, GERMANY/FRIEDRICH-SCHILLER-UNIVERSITY JENA

Chose to attend URI over Coastal Carolina and Loyola Marymount… Selected Rhode Island because he felt it would give him the best opportunity to become a top goalkeeper and win championships while getting the best possible education.


Before URI

  • Played for FC Carl Zeiss Jena from 2007-2018, captaining his U15, U17 and U19 teams.
  • Made appearances for the U17 and U16 German National Teams.
  • Played 20 games in the men's Oberliga and 11 games in the men's Regionalliga.
  • Helped lead his 2016-17 team to the Men's Regionalliga championship title and promotion to the 3rd Bundesliga.
  • 2014-14 and 2015-16 teams were State Cup champions.
  • Played 20 games in the U19 Bundesliga in both 2014-15 and 2013-14.
  • Also was a member of the runner-up team at the 2013-14 School World Championship.

  • Born Aug. 13, 1996.
  • Son of Andrea and Rainer Schmidt.
  • Has one younger brother, Tom.
  • Enjoys reading, fitness, climbing, weight training and kick boxing.

Elliott on Stefan Schmidt: Stefan comes from FC Carl Zeiss Jena of the German 3rd Division and Oberliga. He's an aggressive goalkeeper that commands his box. He's a good example of a modern goalkeeper that is good with his feet and can spring an attack with his accurate side volleys. Stefan comes to URI with a lot of experience, including call-ups for the U16 and U17 German Youth National Teams.


JOHNNY SHERMAN - M/D - 5-7/150 - WEST KINGSTON, R.I./SOUTH KINGSTOWN

Selected Rhode Island because of the training facilities and coaching staff.

Before URI

  • Was a four-year starter and two-time team captain at South Kingstown High School.
  • Finished his high school career with 48 goals.
  • Recorded 17 goals and eight assists his senior year, helping lead SKHS to the Division I state title game.
  • Earned All-Division accolades all four years and was an All-State First Team selection as a junior.
  • Played club soccer for Rams FC (2012-18).
  • Was a two-time Scholar Athlete award winner (2014, 2015).

  • Born Nov. 30, 1999.
  • Son of Sheri and David Sherman.
  • Has two older brothers, Ryan (URI '16) and Mark (URI '19), and a younger sister, Carissa.

Elliott on Johnny Sherman: Johnny comes from our local youth club and has had a ton of success in Rhode Island throughout his youth. The 2017 Gatorade State Player of the year, he can play as a #10, or out wide, and adds great technical ability and work-rate to our team. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish throughout his collegiate career.


SIMON TRCKA - F - 6-0/165 - PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC/ASSUMPTION COLLEGE

Chose to attend URI over Vermont… Selected Rhode Island because of the soccer program, campus location, and academic offerings.

Before URI

  • Spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Division II Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.).
  • Was named to the NE10 All-Conference Second Team as a sophomore, leading the team with 16 points on seven goals and two assists.
  • Registered five goals (four game-winners) and six assists as a freshman, en route to earning NE10 Second Team and All-Rookie accolades.
  • Was an NSCAA All-New England selection at Thornton Academy (Saco, Maine), recording 17 goals and 11 assists his senior season.
  • Also was an SMAA First Team selection, an MSCA All-State honoree and a Portland Press Herald All-State pick.
  • Earned the Biddeford Journal Tribune's Player of the Year award in both 2014 and 2015.

Elliott on Simon Trcka: Simon is a talented #9 striker whose pace and terrific movement will cause tons of problems for defenders. We believe he has pro potential and are excited about what he can accomplish here at URI over the next two years.
