SAAC Date-A-Jock Auction Nets over $1,400 for Johnny Cake Center

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised over $1,400 at its annual Date-A-Jock auction Tuesday night at Edwards Hall on the URI Campus.

Thirty Rhode Island student-athletes were up for auction with proceeds benefiting the Johnny Cake Center, which in turn will use the proceeds to buy teens & children gift cards and toys for the Holidays. The fundraiser also collected 60 canned goods. Following the event, the 200-plus people in attendance, along with the student-athletes, proceeded to Simon's Restaurant in Narragansett for a appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages.

Men's basketball junior Jim Baron (East Greenwich, R.I.) was the highest-selling male athlete at $140 while senior Tamara Burman (Woonsocket, R.I.) was the highest-selling female athlete at $105. Senior Will Daniels (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) - also a member of the men's basketball team - was sold for $50 while women's tennis sophomore Nyssa Peele (Austin, Texas) was sold for $80 and baseball sophomore Nick Greenwood (Southington, Conn.) fetched $40.

The SAAC would like to thank Simon's for donating a portion of the food costs for the event.
