KINGSTON, R.I. -- On Tuesday, Nov. 27, the
University College Advising Programs for Student-Athletes Office
held an Academic Open House. The event featured members of
the University of Rhode Island faculty, athletics department
staffers, and the academic advisors/learning specialists.
"The Academic Open House was a great social opportunity for faculty members to meet and interact with our Academic Advisors/Learning Specialists in their office in Tootell," said Associate AD Gina Sperry. "The idea for the Open House came from a discussion, prompted by a desire to communicate with the Faculty regarding academic support services provided to student athletes and the roles of those involved. We hope this event will encourage future collaboration between all parties."
After welcome remarks from Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn, Dr. Yvette Harps-Logan discussed the role of the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative, while Associate AD for Compliance Paul Kassabian discussed the involvement of the office of NCAA Compliance with academic services.
Linda Lyons, the assistant dean of University College, introduced the four athletic academic advisors - Nicole Poloski/Debra Cohen/Michael Scott/Kristen Casamento - and detailed their respective roles and responsibilities.
Following the open house, the group attended the women's basketball game versus Boston University, with complimentary admission provided by the URI athletics department.
