Inaugural Meet the Players Dinner a Success

Oct. 23, 2006

Tonight, fans of the University of Rhode Island men's and women's basketball teams gathered at the Alpine Coutnry Club for the inaugural Meet the Players Dinner. The event was co-sponsored by the Fast Break and Three Point Clubs, which help to support both Rams basketball squads.

"It was a great night and hopefully the start of a successful tradition here at Rhode Island." Gregg Burke, interim Director of Athletics said. "The student-athletes that make up our men's and women's basketball teams had a fun night with their teammates, while also getting a chance to interact with some of our most loyal supporters."

After opening remarks from both head men's basketball coach Jim Baron and head women's coach Tom Garrick, members of each team introduced their fellow teammates, resulting in some humorous exchanges.

"Tonight's event was a great opportunity for both our fans and the student-athletes." Baron said. "You could certainly see how much the players on both teams care for each other and get along. That's very important during this time of the year, as we're preparing to start the 2006-07 season."

"We're trying to do good things and put the best product on the floor." Garrick explained. "We have a good mix of veterans and youth and we're playing a tough, national schedule."

Both squads open regular season play on Nov. 10, in a doubleheader at the Ryan Center. The women take on Virginia at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men against Stonehill, starting at 7:30 p.m.
