Volleyball To Open Play In the 2009 Art Carmichael Invitational
Sept. 11, 2009
KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's volleyball team (1-4) returns to action Friday night as it begins play in the 2009 Art Carmichael Invitational at Keaney Gymnasium. The two-day tournament will feature New Hampshire (1-5), Syracuse (4-2) and in-state rival Brown (1-1). Rhody's match on Friday against New Hampshire will be just its second match at home this season. In its home-opener last Friday against Dartmouth, the Rams were edged by the Big Green 3-2. Despite the loss, URI outhit Dartmouth (.294-.205) and posted more kills (62-55). Offensively, senior Caitlyn Welsh and sophomore Kayla Wilson posted 15 kills apiece, while newcomers Annie Nelson and Candice Kolkka combined 47 assists, registering 24 and 23, respectively. This year's Art Carmichael Invitational will mark the second tournament Rhody has competed in this fall. URI opened the year at the Hofstra University Tournament and posted a 1-2 mark with its lone victory coming against Hofstra (3-0) back on August 28. Rhody volleyball head coach Bob Schneck enters the tournament just two wins shy of capturing his 500th career victory. Art Carmichael Invitational Saturday, Sept. 12
