Volleyball Falls on Senior Day to Fordham, 3-1

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (14-14 overall; 5-8 Atlantic 10) dropped a 3-1 decision to Fordham on Saturday at Keaney Gymnasium to conclude its 2008 season.

URI honored seniors Jillian Bekke (Minneapolis, Minn.), Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Chinny Okpara (Apple Valley, Calif.) prior to the match.

In addition, both teams entered Saturday afternoon's match with a trip to the 2008 Atlantic 10 Tournament on the line. With the win, Fordham earned the final spot to St. Louis, Mo., for this year's championship.

Junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) led the way offensively with a team-high 15 kills. Welsh also tallied 13 digs to post her 16th double-double on the year (kills and digs).

Freshman Kayla Wilson (Santa Monica, Calif.) also reached double-figures in kills as she recorded 13 terminations.

Defensively for the Rams, Doino led the way with a match-high 23 digs. In 2008, Doino led the squad with 478 digs.

URI opened the match with a 25-19 victory in the first set, outhitting Fordham .242-.105.

Fordham responded wins in the second and third sets, winning 25-19 and 25-23, respectively to take a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set, Fordham appeared to be in control leading 24-20, but URI stormed back to win the next three points, but FU would go on to win the next point to close out the match.

URI's 14 victories in 2008 were the most since the 2002 campaign when the Rams finished with 16 wins.
