Rhody Shuts Out George Washington, 3-0

KINSGTON, R.I. - Freshman setter Annie Nelson recorded a match-high 37 assists to lead the Rhode Island volleyball team (9-15; 2-9 Atlantic 10) to a 3-0 win over George Washington Sunday afternoon at Keaney Gymnasium.

Junior Kayla Newberg also chipped in offensively with 14 kills on .542 hitting. Defensively, senior Caitlyn Welsh led the way with 14 digs.

Rhody set the tone for the day as it claimed the first four points in game one. The Colonials fought back to take a 12-11 lead. URI would then go on to win five of the next six points and would not look back as it won the opening frame 25-21.

In game two URI lost the first point, but that was the only time the Rams would trail in the second frame as came out with a 25-21 victory to take 2-0 lead.

In the third frame, both teams were tied at 11 points apiece, but URI would then win eight of the next 10 points to take a 19-13 lead. URI would then go on to claim a 25-19 victory to close out the Colonials.

Rhody returns to action Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. as it travels to Dayton.
